Well, it’s July and everything is growing (including the weeds)!
We’re an entirely organic orchard so we don’t use any herbicides or pesticides on the farm. Our farming is done using organic practices and we manage our orchard in compliance with the National Organic Standards thorough PACs (Pacific Agricultural Certification Society). I’m sure you can imagine, it’s a lot of work managing the pests; bugs and weeds included!
In our 1000 tree orchard you will be happy to know that the crop of 60 varieties of cider making apples is coming in strong. We’re busy thinning them so that come harvest, we’ve got only the best cider making fruit.
We primarily grow German, English, and some French and North American cider making apple varieties. Most are bittersweets which are not very palatable eating or cooking apples because of their astringency. This astringency gives a really nice darker colour to the cider as well as a drying sensation on the palate. We can’t wait to start crushing them come September!
But, for now, we’re content to soak-up some long summer days and watch watch our apples grow.
Come by for a visit and taste some cider. We would be happy to show you around the orchard!
