As many of you know, one of our most prized ciders is made from crowd-sourced fruit. That’s right – the delightfully juicy Kings and Spies is made from local Victoria apples that we get from un-kept orchards all over Victoria.
When settlers first came to Victoria in the 1800’s they brought apple seeds to plant apple orchards surrounding Fort Victoria. By 1865 there were a number of orchards from five to 25 acres on the Island. While much has changed since then, many of these trees still exist today! They can be found in backyards, parks, universities and on sprawling acreages all over Victoria.
Most of these varietals were King of Tompkins and Northern Spies and coincidentally these are the very apples that we use in Kings & Spies today.
Do you have apple trees in your yard? More apples than you could ever possibly eat? We will happily purchase them from you, or even trade you for Kings & Spies cider.
We will pay $0.45/lb (or same value trade for bottled cider) for ripe, sound, unblemished apples delivered to Sea Cider. Apples may be delivered Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm by appointment.
